Water Pressure: When Do You Need a PRV?

Quick answerResidential water pressure should generally sit between 40 and 80 psi. Above 80 psi, the plumbing code requires a pressure-reducing valve (PRV). High pressure shortens the life of fixtures, water heaters and supply lines, and PRVs themselves wear out, often after 10–15 years.

How to test

A hose-bibb pressure gauge costs little at any hardware store. Test with all fixtures off. Readings above 80 psi mean you need a working PRV.

Signs of high pressure

  • Banging pipes (water hammer)
  • Running toilets and dripping faucets
  • Water heater relief valve dripping
  • Short-lived fixtures and supply lines

PRVs and expansion

A PRV creates a closed system, so thermal expansion control at the water heater is typically required.

Hilly areas

Elevation changes in Lakeway, Stone Oak and other hillside areas can push pressure well above 80 psi.

Enter your pressure into the Fixture Unit Calculator for a quick check, or book a home plumbing assessment.
